Popular Tattoo Designs
Fashions come and fashions go, and tattoo designs ain’t no different. Unfortunately, by their very nature, tattoos are a little more permanent than a pair of shoes, skirt length or hairstyle – but that doesn’t stop millions of people from having their body drawn on and colored in every year . . . mostly women these days apparently!
Tattoo designs have certainly come a long way since I used to peer through the window of the local tattoo artist as a child (usually on the way to the beach), choosing which small, black figure I would choose as soon as I was old enough! Many of the most popular tattoo designs these days are drawn freehand . . . it’s definitely more “body art” than “tattoo” these days.
Tattoo designs are extremely popular amongst celebrities, which in turn means that they’re high up on the “must have” list of many of today’s young people. The daughter of a friend of mine went to get her first tattoo only last week, a few little stars and doves along the top of her shoulder, she was so proud and couldn’t wait to show me her very first tattoo design. Unfortunately I didn’t have my eye-glasses on at the time and, I’m not sure whether I just thought this or said it out loud, but it kind of looked like somebody had splattered her with a leaky ink pen – sorry Amy!
Some tattoo designs are incredible – I mean these tattoo artists really are ARTISTS – take a look at this monster!

How would you like one of those mama’s crawling over your shoulder? It doesn’t half make you do a double take though.
Popular Tattoo Designs
So which type of tattoo designs really can stand the test of time? Which have managed to ink their way onto generation, upon generation, upon generation?
- Names of loved ones – when will they learn? It’s okay to have the names of your children eternally emblazoned across your shoulder, but “life partners” don’t always mean life. Are you listening Angelina?
- Sports signs and emblems – this is another type of tattoo design you’ve gotta’ be careful of. A friend of mine had her favorite racing drivers helmet design tattooed onto her shoulder . . . from 1994! Needless to say he’s changed the design quite a few times since then, even though he’s still racing. Wotta mistaka to maka!
- Tribal designs – are extremely popular tattoo designs. They’re intricate, they’re attractive and offer endless rich choices for any tattoo enthusiast.
- Chinese symbols – beware, if you’re gonna’ have any type of tattoo design which incorporates another language, be it Chinese, Latin, Greek, Egyptian or Double Dutch, be careful that your translation is accurate.
- Words – if you have any words tattooed onto your body for all eternity, make sure that you find a tattoo artist who can spell
- Angels – are another eternally popular theme for a tattoo design, after all, who doesn’t need a guardian angel? Angel tattoos are popular amongst men and women.
- Dragons – are popular too, perhaps because they make the “wearer” feel a bit like a dragon slayer!
- Butterflies – butterfly tattoo designs are very popular amongst women (don’t recall seeing any guys with a butterfly tat on their shoulder) – Mariah Carey probably has a lot to do with the popularity of butterfly tattoo designs. Butterflies do, however, represent many things which women can identify with – fragility, beauty, happiness, metamorphosis!
- Fairies – are another one for the girls . . . after all, fairies do make wishes come true!
- Lion and Tiger tattoos are much more manly, and still very popular. Signifying strength, leadership, courage . . . oh, you beast!
- Barbed wire – is another popular tattoo design which can be seen on both men and women, surprisingly enough.
